More deals are emerging every day from this year’s Toronto Film Festival, with Magnolia Pictures’ genre label – Magnet Releasing – being the latest to announce an acquisition. Magnet’s picked up Goon, a hockey comedy directed by Michael Dowse and written by actor Jay Baruchel and Evan Goldberg (Superbad, Pineapple Express, The Green Hornet), for release in the US.

The Goon cast includes Baruchel, Seann William Scott, Liev Schreiber and Alison Pill. Baruchel also produced the film along with David Gross, Jesse Shapira, and Don Carmody.

Magnolia/Magnet President Eamonn Bowles commented on the pick up, stating: “Goon is a pucking blast. It’s a complete crowd pleaser that has all the elements of a future comedy classic.”

Magnolia’s aiming for an early 2012 theatrical release.

The Goon Plot:

Goon is the story of Doug Glatt (Scott), a down-on-his-luck bouncer who’s been touched by the fist of God. Upon discovering both his right hook and skates, he joins a hockey team destined for the cellar and inspires them into the playoffs.
