Mariah Carey will join a list that includes The Jacksons, James Brown, Al Green, and The Bee Gees on September 7, 2012 when she’s honored as a BMI Icon at the BMI Urban Awards in Beverly Hills. The BMI Icon title is given to artists whose “unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers” sets them apart from their peers.

Per the announcement from BMI: “Mariah Carey is one of the most prolifically successful songwriters of the last several decades in any genre of music. With her distinct five-octave vocal range and the finesse with which she scaled it, Carey defined the modern pop performance, delivering the songs she wrote with awe-inspiring grace and power.”

Carey released her first album in 1990 and has, over the course of her career, set a record as the solo artist with the most Hot 100 #1 singles (she has 18). She’s sold more than 200 million albums, singles and videos, and she’s the top selling female artist in history. She’s currently back in the studio writing and recording her next album.
