During Sony’s presentation at CinemaCon in Vegas, Chairman of the Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group Tom Rothman broke the news that Christopher Miller and Phil Lord (The LEGO Movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) are writing a treatment for and will be producing an animated Spider-Man film. The just-announced film will take “Spider-Man back to his graphic roots” and will be the first animated Spider-Man feature film.
Rothman also confirmed Lord and Miller’s movie will exist separately from the universe of the live-action Spider-Man films.
The animated movie will arrive on July 20, 2018 and has Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Amy Pascal on board as producers. Pascal and Marvel’s Kevin Feige are producing the live-action 2017 Spider-Man movie.
