Katharine McPhee went from American Idol to starring in the music-driven series Smash, but with CBS’s Scorpion she’s tackling a role different from anything she’s done before. Elyes Gabel plays genius Walter O’Brien, and McPhee co-stars as the mother of a gifted son who is drawn in by O’Brien’s Scorpion team (part of Homeland Security). The team, comprised of ‘brilliant misfits,’ works to stop high-tech threats.

The TV series is based on the work of the real Walter O’Brien and his team, and O’Brien is hoping to raise awareness of the unit and find recruits who are intellectually capable of assisting with his work in shutting down threats before any damage is done.

Paired up for interviews at the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con, Gabel and McPhee talked about being a part of a series that is based in large part on true events and the weight that adds in making sure they get it right while entertaining viewers.

Scorpion debuts on CBS on September 22, 2014 and will air on Monday nights at 9pm ET/PT.
